Q. I am involved in an auto accident with a Berea College vehicle while on campus. What should I do?
If any parties involved are injured, please contact 911 immediately and then Public Safety at 859-985-3333. The accident must be reported to the Department of Public Safety at 859-985-3333 as soon as possible. The Dept. of Public Safety will determine if the local police department needs to be called once they respond to the scene. A Public Safety Officer will file a motor vehicle accident report which will be forwarded to the insurance company for handling.
Q. I am involved in an auto accident with a Berea College vehicle while off campus, but while conducting college business. What should I do?
Please contact the local police department or 911. If involved in a two or more car accident, please be sure to obtain the insurance information of all other vehicles involved. In addition, please contact Public Safety at 859-985-3333 to report the incident as soon as possible. Please provide Public Safety with the police report number and insurance information of all the vehicles involved. As soon as possible upon returning to campus, please contact Public Safety to file a complete accident report. Public Safety will forward the report to the insurance company for handling.
Q. I plan to rent a vehicle for college business travel in the United Stated. Should I purchase the insurance offered by the rental car company?
No, you should not purchase any insurance offered through the rental car company for domestic business travel within the United States, Canada, or U.S. territories & possessions. The college’s auto liability policy will cover you and the rental vehicle during business travel within these areas.
Q. I am traveling overseas on college business and plan to rent a vehicle in a foreign country. Will the college’s auto liability insurance coverage apply?
No, the college’s auto policy only applies to the business travel in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories & possessions. The insurance coverage offered by the rental car company should be purchased to meet compulsory insurance requirements of the foreign country. Coverage for theft or physical damage to the rental vehicle should also be purchased from the rental company.
Q. I am using a personal vehicle for college business. Am I covered under the college’s automobile liability policy?
No, the Berea College automobile liability policy only applies to college owned, leased, or rented vehicles; therefore, personal vehicles would not be covered.
Q. My personal vehicle is damaged while parked on campus. Will the college’s insurance coverage apply?
No, vehicles owned by faculty, staff, students, or guests of the college are not covered by the college’s insurance while parked on campus. Damage to your personal vehicle should be covered under your personal auto insurance policy.
Q. While traveling on college business, I received traffic of parking violation while using a college vehicle. Who is responsible for paying the fine?
The individual driving the vehicle at the time of the violation is responsible for any traffic or parking fines.
Q. I am going on a business trip for the college. Can I take my family or friends with me?
No, no one should be in any college vehicle, unless they are actively participating in the program.
Q. I have been asked to provide evidence of the college’s insurance coverage. Who should I contact?
A copy of the insurance card is located in the key packet of each vehicle. Any further insurance information must be obtained from the President’s Office.
Q. If I drive my personal vehicle for a college sponsored event, can I take other students with me?
Anyone traveling with you would need to sign a waiver releasing the college from any liability and your insurance would have to cover them as passengers in your vehicle.
