Public Service Awards

Service Award Nominations

We invite you to nominate persons for the award using the online form.  Please be certain to include all the pertinent information that is requested on the form.  Please recall that you are in a better position than the committee to highlight the achievements of your nominee.

The following are the guidelines for the Service Award:

  1. Nominations from General Faculty members, Board members, staff, alumni and friends of the College;
  2. Not more than three awards are presented in one year;
  3. To honor persons who in their daily lives and their service to humanity have exemplified the Berea Commitments;
  4. To honor practical service by persons in all walks of life.

Recent recipients of the Berea College Service Award include: former West Virginia Congressman Ken Hechler, Leslie County native and community organizer Daymon Morgan, and Pat Wear, II, advocate for the disabled (all 2009-2010); Helen Ashe and Ellen Turner, founders of Love Kitchen, and Earl Hager, West Virginia legislator (all 2010-11); Kavita Ramdas, President and CEO, Global Fund for Women, Denise S. Hill, Founder and Director of Branches of Monroe County, and Jean L. Thomas, founder of the Haiti Christian Development Fund (all 2011-12); anti-mountaintop removal activist Beverly May (2012-2013), sustainable energy entrepreneur Henry Red Cloud and Eastern Kentucky community leader Carolyn Sundy (2013-2014); Mam-Yassin Sarr, advocate for girls’ education in The Gambia and founder of Starfish International (2014 -15).
