Here are answers to the most common questions students ask us about the Berea College interview requirement.


1. Who is required to interview?

The interview is a required for first-time freshman students. Transfer students and international students are not required to complete a personal interview.

2. Why is an interview required?

We believe an interview in an important part of your application to Berea because it allows us to know you as a person, not just a test score. It also helps you understand more about Berea, our values and expectations for our students. It is our hope that by the end of this short conversation that both you and the admissions counselor will have a better understanding of whether Berea is the right college for you.

3. Who will be conducting the interview?

Our admissions counselors who will be conducting most of the personal interviews.

4. What will I be asked in the interview?

The questions in our personal interview are designed to help us understand more about you as a person and what your plans are for your future.

Our expectation from the interview is simply to get to know you better as a person. We ask that you come prepared to talk openly and honestly about yourself, your experiences and your plans for the future.

5. What part will the interview play in whether or not I am offered admission?

The interview is just one of the elements in our decision-making process. In addition to your interview results, we also evaluate your academic achievements, essay, recommendations and financial qualifications

6. Besides myself and the interviewer, will anyone else be permitted to sit in on my interview?

Our experience shows that applicants are more focused in one-on-one conversations with an admissions counselor. Friends and family members are encouraged to join you in visiting our campus; however they will be asked to wait in our lobby while you meet individually with an admissions counselor.

7. How long will the interview take?

Most interviews require between 20 and 30 minutes of your time.

8. When should I arrive for the interview?

It's probably a good idea to arrive on campus at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment(s).

9. What should I wear to the interview?

We encourage you to dress comfortably, especially with regard to shoes, since it is likely you will be walking about campus. Business attire is not required, however we do suggest you select an outfit that represents you well.

10. Do I need to bring anything with me?

If you have documents that are required to complete your file (such as a high school transcript, recommendation(s), etc.,) please bring them with you. You should also plan to dress appropriately for the weather. You are not expected to bring anything else.

11. Is there anything I should do to prepare for the interview?

Not really. Just come, be yourself, and have a great time while on campus!
