Applying for Admission: Transfer Students

Berea encourages the application of transfer students who have achieved a minimum college GPA of 3.0. Students who have attended a regionally accredited institution may expect all of their non-technical course work in which they earned a grade of "C" or higher to be transferable.

Students who have completed more than 44 semester hours of college credit may not be eligible for admission. In no case is any student who has earned an undergraduate degree eligible for admission.

Students who have attempted college-level coursework must have official copies of all transcripts sent to the Admissions Office even if they do not wish to transfer the credit. Students who have not performed as well as they may have liked in previous coursework may include a written explanation with their application. Failure to report previous college-level work will result in the withdrawal of an offer of admission and/or dismissal from the College.

In order to be considered by our Admissions Decision Team, you must submit a complete application. A complete transfer application consists of the following items:

  • A completed "Application for Admission and Scholarship" form
  • Your written response to one of two essay options
  • Financial information in the form of FAFSA results (preferred) or submission of Berea's Family Resource Questionnaire (which may serve as a tentative means for determining the likelihood of financial eligibility)

For students applying for admission for Fall 2008, the FRQ may be submitted prior to March 1 as a tentative indication of financial eligibility. After March 1, students must submit 2008-2009 FAFSA.

For students applying for Fall 2009, the FRQ may be submitted starting June 1, 2008 and prior to March 1, 2009 as a tentative indication of financial eligibility. After March 1, students must submit 2009-2010 FAFSA.

  • Official high school transcript
  • Official ACT or SAT I scores (waived for applicants who are able to present an official transcript showing grades for at least 24 semester hours of college credit at a regionally accredited institution)
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation, each from a former teacher, principal, or other school administrator (unless you have not recently been enrolled, in which case, recommendations from professionals in non-educational fields and/or other community leaders will be accepted)
  • Official college transcript(s) sent directly to the Berea College Office of Admissions from each institution attending/attended

Berea College welcomes applications from transferring students for both Fall and Spring Terms.

Fall Admission

Admissions decisions are made on a rolling basis beginning in January and generally ending in late April.

Spring Admission

The Admissions Decision Team reviews Spring Term applications October through December. To be eligible for review, applications must become complete no later than November 30th.

In addition to other application requirements, all spring applicants must be able to waive our basic math requirement by means of one of the following:

  • a minumum ACT Math score of 17 that includes a minimum Algebra subscore of 8
  • a minimum SAT Math score of 440
  • a college-level algebra course earned at a regionally accredited institution (often referred to as MATH 101).

Applicants who wish to pursue a degree in nursing also must be able to transfer a college-level anatomy course that includes gross anatomy (ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY I at many institutions).

Although not required, some degree of preference may be given to spring applicants who are able to present transfer credit for the following basic coursework:

  • first-semester English Composition (ENGL 101at many institutions).
