The Biology Program at Berea College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Botany, beginning August 2012. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in botany, plant sciences, forest ecology, or closely related area, a strong commitment to teaching and the ability to actively engage undergraduates with research in the classroom, research lab, and in the field. Post-doctoral research experience is highly desired; previous college teaching experience is strongly preferred. Teaching responsibilities in the Biology Program will include introductory botany, junior/senior-level field botany, introductory majors biology, and an advanced course(s) in applicant's area of specialty. The candidate will also be expected to teach in the College's General Education Program. The candidate is expected to develop an active research program involving undergraduate students. The successful applicant will be eligible to apply for College-supported Undergraduate Research and Creative Projects Grants to fund summer research actively involving undergraduate students and will also be expected to seek outside funding as the research progresses.
The Biology Program, one of five programs in a new divisional structure, has five faculty members and one post-doctoral teaching fellow who are dedicated to undergraduate teaching and research excellence and welcomes all candidates who are committed to working in such an environment. The program is housed in the Charles Martin Hall Science Building, which has facilities and equipment to support teaching laboratory experiences and research projects and also laboratory and field scholarly research. Program Faculty also have ready access to the 8000-acre Berea College Forest, the John B. Stephenson Memorial Forest including Anglin Falls, College reservoirs, and the College herbarium.
