Berea College is a four-year institution devoted to undergraduate education rooted in the liberal arts. The College’s mission includes special commitments to students of limited economic means and high ability, the Appalachian region, and interracial and intercultural education. Founded in 1855, Berea College was the first school in the south to offer an inter-racial, co-educational education. A full tuition scholarship for each student and a work program in which all students participate have long been distinctive features of a Berea education.
Berea College students often are the first in their families to attend college, and they excel in Berea’s academic environment. Berea graduates distinguish themselves in many fields, including social service, government, ministry, the arts, business, education, medicine, and science, and many go on to earn graduate degrees.
The town of Berea (pop. 15,000) lies forty miles south of Lexington and is approximately two hours from Cincinnati or Louisville. Located on the edge of the rolling Bluegrass Region and at the western foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Berea College houses approximately 1,500 undergraduate students, enrolled in 22 academic departments.
