Since 2001, a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities has made it possible for Berea College to establish a rotating endowed chair in Appalachian Studies. Berea College invites applications or nominations of a humanities scholar, broadly defined, in Appalachian Studies, beginning in August 2010. The College may renew this position for up to three years. The NEH Chair was established to provide support for the College’s Appalachian commitment, primarily in two areas: faculty research on Appalachian topics in the important print and non-print collections at Berea as well as the integration of regional materials into the classroom. Both junior and senior scholars will be considered for the position.
The teaching load will be three classes per academic year during the appointment period. The holder of the chair will also pursue a project on an Appalachian topic in the humanities and will share this and other knowledge of the Appalachian Region with students, staff, and faculty through presentations and the preparation of materials related to the study of Appalachia. More information can be found online at http://www.berea.edu/appalachiancenter/nehchair.asp.
Those wishing to apply should provide:
- A description of the proposed research project;
- Descriptions of possible courses and an outline of envisioned contributions to campus on Appalachian subjects;
- A current curriculum vitae;
- Three letters of recommendation.
Application materials should be sent to:
