Senior Foundations and Communications Associate

A position for an experienced professional ready to assume shared leadership, the Senior Foundations and Communications Associate reports to the Director of Foundations, Capital Projects, and Development Communications in the Berea College Development Department. Designed as a mid-level position with potential for advancement, the Senior Foundations and Communications Associate has two primary areas of responsibility: (1) assisting with the College’s efforts to raise support from private foundations, and (2) leading the planning and implementation of the annual Development communications plan.
 
Responsibilities:
The work with foundations involves having direct contact with private foundations, including visits as needed; working with administration and faculty to develop funding projects; writing proposals and reports; and assisting in grants administration.

Oversight and production of Development’s communications program, particularly fundraising materials, involves working primarily with print materials, but also serving as Web liaison for Development, providing strategic leadership in the use of electronic communications, and working with other departments to integrate campus communications. Along with coordinating production of communications materials, this position assists with copy editing and proofreading services to the department.
 
Qualifications:
Applicants should demonstrate ability to write persuasively and quickly for diverse audiences, solid computer expertise, and the capacity to manage multiple tasks. Other expectations are superior proficiency in the following: grammar and mechanics; professional writing, editing, and proofreading; electronic communications; and managing projects. Desired skills include analytical and creative abilities, initiative, and flexibility to work collaboratively as part of the communications team.

Requirements include a bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in such fields as English, communications, or journalism. Preferred background includes experience with private foundations and in producing and marketing fundraising communications, including digital materials; three to five years’ experience in fundraising communications; successful coordination of complex projects; and professional writing and copy editing. Some travel in connection with the foundations work is expected. Experience in private higher education, a professional commitment to fundraising work, and a zeal for advancing the special mission of Berea College are essential.
