Tenure-track Assistant Professors of Organic Chemistry and Geochemistry

Department: Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at Berea College seeks to hire two tenure-track positions to start fall 2009.  One of these positions will be in organic chemistry and the other position will be in geochemistry.  Both positions require a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree.  Post-doctoral research and teaching experience are highly desirable.  Responsibilities include teaching introductory and upper level chemistry courses, contributing to the College’s general education program, and directing student research.  Applicants must be strongly committed to undergraduate liberal education and research.

Berea College students often are the first in their families to attend college, and they excel in Berea’s rigorous, nationally-recognized academic environment.  Berea College ranks among the leading colleges in the South in graduating students who go on to earn the Ph.D., and our graduates distinguish themselves in many fields, including social service, government, the arts, business, education, medicine, and science.

The town of Berea, forty miles south of Lexington and two hours from Cincinnati, is located on the edge of rolling bluegrass country and the western foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.  About 1,500 college students, almost all residential and full-time, are enrolled in B.A. and B.S. programs in 20 academic departments.  More information about Berea College is available at http://www.berea.edu

Berea College has a rich tradition of teaching excellence in the classroom, the laboratory and beyond.  The College is committed in its mission to provide a quality college education to high ability students of limited economic means, to foster interracial and intercultural education and to serve the Appalachian region. Minority candidates are especially encouraged to apply.  Interested applicants should send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, graduate and undergraduate academic transcripts, a statement of teaching philosophy, a description of a research program that would involve undergraduate collaborators and three letters of recommendation to: Dr. Jay Baltisberger, CPO 1722, Berea College, Berea, KY 40404.  Consideration of applicants will begin December 1st, 2008; applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

Berea College, in light of its mission in the tradition of impartial love and social equality, welcomes all people of the earth to learn and work here.
