Biography
Charles Turner is Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music Education and Brass Instrument Performance at Berea College. A native of Ashland, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio, Turner holds degrees from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, Indiana University School of Music, and Morehead State University. He has studied conducting with Niklaus Wyss of the Houston Symphony Orchestra, Chris Nance of the New York City Opera, Ned Battista of the Houston Pops Orchestra, and wind conductors Dr. Robert Hawkins and Dr. John Locke. Turner has studied tuba with Harvey Phillips, Dr. Earle L. Louder, Leonard B. Smith, and Dr. Dennis AsKew.

Prior to joining the Berea Faculty in 2001, Turner held positions at Myers Park Magnet High School of Charlotte, North Carolina, Marion County Schools (KY), Houston (TX) 5-A High School Band Programs (Brass Specialist), Wilkes University, Pikeville College, North Carolina State University, Texas State University, the Kentucky Institute for International Studies at Salzburg, Austria, the North Carolina Governor’s School 20th-Century Music Program, and the Detroit Concert Band, Inc. Turner has recorded for major recording companies and television and radio networks including: Telarc Recordings, H & R Recordings, ABC Television and ABC Home Video, The Book of the Month Club Recordings Division, Heritage of the March Recordings, The Arts and Entertainment Network; Walking Frog Recordings, PBS Television, and National Public Radio.

Dr. Turner is a member of Music Educators National Conference, the Kentucky Music Educator’s Association, World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, the College Music Society, and Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honors Society. His biography is included in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who Among Teachers in America. He resides in Richmond, Kentucky with his wife Jeannie and daughters Maggie and Erin.
