Biography

Atossa Kramer began her music study at the age of 8 in New York. She continued her study of music through high school, graduating from Ann Arbor High School in Ann Arbor Michigan. During those years she participated in both school and regional bands and orchestras as well as studying privately. She spent two summers at Interlochen Music Camp during this time.

After graduating from the Oberlin Conservatory, she came to Kentucky . She worked in eastern Kentucky at the Hindman Settlement School and the Pine Mountain Settlement School. At Hindman, she was the first driver/teacher of the Music Mobile. This was an itinerate music program taken to some of the remote one- and two-room schools in Knott County. At Pine Mountain, she taught grade school for several years as a regular classroom teacher.

In addition to her classical training on piano and clarinet, she has developed a love for music of the folk tradition, specifically English and American country dance music. This inspired her to learn to play the accordion as well as the recorder. Ms. Kramer is currently involved in playing for folk dance workshops in New England and the south. She is a musician for the Berea College Country Dancers as well as on the staff for the Christmas Country Dance School held at Berea every year.

In 1998 Ms Kramer became the 2nd clarinetist in the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra. This orchestra has a full season of programs including the classics, pops, and children’s concerts. She is a member of the recorder consort of Musick’s Company, also in Lexington. This group specializes in early music but also performs some more modern works and gives several concerts each year. In addition to these groups, she plays with other small ensembles and performs solo recitals.

Ms Kramer has been part of the faculty of Berea College since 1975. She also maintains a small private studio.

When not playing or teaching music, she enjoys reading, going on the water with her Poke boat, and spending time with her two children and four grandchildren.
