Matt Talbert is currently an Assistant Professor of Instrumental Music and head of the Music Education program at Berea College, where his duties include teaching courses in music education and directing the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble.
Prior to his appointment at Berea, Talbert was an adjunct faculty member at the University of South Carolina, and the assistant director of the Congaree New Horizons Band. This band encourages life-long music-making by providing the opportunity for adults age 50 and over to learn to play a band instrument. Talbert taught private lessons, directed one of the concert bands, and directed the jazz ensemble.
As a public school teacher, Talbert was a band director for five years in Winston-Salem, NC. During his tenure, Talbert’s students consistently placed in All-County Band, All-District Band, and All-State Band. Ensembles under Talbert’s direction have consistently earned Superior ratings at District and State Concert Festivals. Dr. Talbert remains active as an adjudicator and clinician.
Currently, Talbert’s research interests focus on how adult amateur musicians process music and the development of independent musicians, as well as lesson plan strategies/processes of pre-service teachers.
Talbert graduated from Appalachian State University (BME, MME) and the University of South Carolina (Ph.D.). Dr. Talbert is a member of NAfME: National Association for Music Education, Kentucky Music Educators Association, and Pi Kappa Lambda. Talbert lives in Berea with his wife, Jaclyn, and two children, Davis and Gracie.
