Trailblazing African American theologian leading “Accent on Christian Faith 2009’’ Sept. 22-24 at Berea College

| Rev. Katie G. Cannon, Ph.D., the first African American woman to be ordained in the United Presbyterian Church (USA) and a renowned author and teacher, will lead Berea College’s annual ‘’Accent on Christian Faith Week” activities Tuesday through Thursday, Sept 22-24.
On Thursday, Sept. 24, Rev. Cannon will present a Convocation address at 3 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel, speaking on “Making Wisdom Visible: Black Women’s Literature as Embodied Mediated Knowledge.” Rev. Cannon also will lead worship services in Danforth Chapel on Tuesday and Thursday at noon. Her sermon for the service on Tuesday will be “Confidence in the Ableness of God.” On Thursday, the sermon is titled “Prophets for a New Day.” On Tuesday and Wednesday, Rev. Cannon will join bell hooks, distinquished professor in residence in Appalachian Studies at Berea, for conversation on the topic of “Life Lessons: Mortals Obeying Divine Mandates.” Tuesday’s session is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Baird Lounge of the Alumni Building. The conversation continues Wednesday at 11:45 a.m. in Phelps Stokes Room 206, as part of the Peanut Butter and Gender series sponsored by Women’s Studies. All programs are free and open to the public. Rev. Cannon was the first African American woman to earn a Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary in New York City. She is currently the Annie Scales Rogers Professor of Christian Ethics at Union and the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Virginia. Cannon focuses her work in the areas of Christian ethics, Womanist theology, and women in religion and society. She has lectured nationally on theological and ethical topics and is the author or editor of numerous articles and seven books including “Katie’s Canon: Womanism and the Soul of the Black Community” and “Black Womanist Ethics.” “Accent on Christian Faith 2009” is sponsored by the Willis D.
