Sustainability pioneers John and Nancy Jack Todd featured speakers for April 8 Berea College Sustainability and Environmental Studies (SENS) 10th anniversary event

3/25/09
On Wednesday, April 8, Berea College’s Sustainability and Environmental Studies program will host a 10 year anniversary event featuring sustainable living pioneers John Todd and Nancy Jack Todd.   Events are scheduled throughout the day and evening from noon – 9 p.m. and include presentations and programs with the Todds, with graduates of Berea’s SENS program, the dedication of the Ecovillage Orchard and a tour of the Ecovillage complex.  Admission is free and open to the public.

John Todd is Research Professor and Distinguished Lecturer in the School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Vermont.  He was the recipient of the 2008 Buckminster Fuller Challenge Award for his project proposal “Comprehensive Design for a Carbon Neutral World:  The Challenge of Appalachia.”

Nancy Jack Todd is Vice President of Ocean Arks International, editor of its journal Annals of Earth and the author of “A Safe and Sustainable World:  the promise of ecological design” and many other works.  She was the co-founder with John Todd of the New Alchemy Institute, one of the first facilities involved with research in appropriate-scale technology.

Nancy and John Todd have received the Bioneers Award, the Charles and Ann Morrow Lindbergh Award, the Daimler/Chrysler award for design, the United Nations (FUNEP) Award, and the Swiss Threshold Award for contributions to human knowledge.

Sustainability and Environmental Studies (SENS) is an interdisciplinary academic program at Berea College centered on ecological design – the purposeful integration of human actions with the structures and functions of the natural world.  The goal of SENS is to help its students acquire the knowledge and practical skills necessary to prosper in a world that faces unprecedented threats to environmental and economic well-being, while contributing to the development of resilient communities and a sustainable society.

SENS is a major component of Berea College’s commitment to becoming a sustainable campus, providing educational experiences in sustainable living for all members of the campus community and being a leader and model for sustainable practices in service to the region and beyond.  For more about SENS and Berea’s sustainability initiatives, visit www.berea.edu/SENS or call (859) 985-3593.
