Summer Carillon Concert Series at Berea College begins Monday, June 2

5/27/08

Performers from Denmark, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky will be featured in the 2008 Summer Carillon Concert Series at Berea College.  The Music Department will present a series of concerts on Draper Tower’s 56-bell carillon, the largest in the state of Kentucky.

Concerts will be held at 7:30 p.m. on the first or second  Monday of each month, and will last for one hour.  Seating in the College Quadrangle will be provided, and a video monitor will allow persons at ground level to view the player in action.  Visitors may greet the evening’s artist at the entrance to the Draper Building five minutes after the concert.

Admission is free all are invited to attend this festive Summer Carillon Concert Series.

The first concert, on June 2, will feature Ann-Kirstine Christiansen, Carillonneur of the King Frederick IX Royal Carillon in Løgumkloster, Denmark.  She is also a Professor and Chair of the Scandinavian Carillon School. For eight years, she was the President of the Nordic Society for Campanology and Carillon Playing. She is currently a member of the Executive Board of the World Carillon Federation, and serves as its Secretary of European Affairs.  She has given concerts in 18 countries, including 8 U.S. tours.

Ms. Christiansen has designed a particularly attractive program for Berea, including a section of “Nature” pieces, such as “Little Bird” by Grieg,  “Flight of the Bumblebee” and “The Swan.”  “Aspects of Love and of the Night”  includes “Vesper” and “Nocturne” by Scandinavian composers and Puccini’s aria from Turandot  “Nessun dorma” (Nobody Sleeps).  Her program will open with Berea composer John Courter’s “Suite No 1” and close with John Williams’ “Hedwig’s Theme” from the Harry Potter movies.

Additional Concerts are:
July 7:  John Courter, Carillonneur of Berea College, Kentucky
August 11:  John Gouwens, Carillonneur of Culver Academies, Culver, Indiana
