Summer Carillon Concert Series at Berea College begins June 8

6-02-2009
Performers from Portugal, Washington, D.C., Michigan and Kentucky will be featured in the 2008 Summer Carillon Concert Series at Berea College. The Music Department will present a series of concerts on Draper Tower’s 56-bell carillon, the largest in the state of Kentucky.  Concerts will be held at 7:30 p.m. on the first or second Monday of each month, and will last about one hour.  Seating in the College Quadrangle will be provided, and a video monitor will allow persons at ground level to view the player in action. Admission is free for all events.

June 8:  Jonathan Lehrer, Carillonneur of “Cast in Bronze” at Renaissance Festivals
July 6:  The LVSITANVS Carillon Duo, Ana and Sara Elias from Portugal
August 3:  John Courter, Carillonneur of Berea College, Kentucky
September 7 (Labor Day):   To be announced

The first concert, on June 8, will feature Jonathan Lehrer, who began his carillon studies at Yale University in 2000. He is also a graduate of the Belgian Royal Carillon School, and was a Laureate in the Queen Fabiola International Carillon Competition, held in Mechelen, Belgium in September, 2008. He has played four concert tours spanning the US, Canada, Belgium and the Netherlands.  Since 2008, he has been performing the “Cast in Bronze” theatrical carillon show on the Mobile Millennium Carillon at Renaissance festivals across the country. When not performing, Jon enjoys studying tai chi and hang-gliding.

Jon Lehrer has designed an attractive program for Berea, starting with two Baroque pieces originally for harpsichord.  A set of three dances includes Dvorak’s “Slavonic Dance No. 2,” Grieg’s “Elves’ Dance,” and Leroy Anderson’s “The Waltzing Cat.”
Three recent compositions for carillon includes the first performance in Berea of John Courter’s “Soliloquy,” written as the required piece for the 2008 Queen Fabiola Competition in Belgium, followed by “Sonatine” by Stefano Colletti, and “Hattem Groove” by Kenneth Theunissen.  The final set features film music from Final Fantasy X (“To Zanarkand”), Beauty and the Beast (“Be Our Guest”), and The Muppet Movie (“The Rainbow Connection”).

All are invited to attend this festive Summer Carillon Concert Series, held on the first or second Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Visitors may greet the evening’s artist at the entrance to the Draper Building five minutes after the concert.
