Science writer and teacher Chet Raymo to speak at Berea College Nov. 30

11/17/06
Science columnist, author and teacher Dr. Chet Raymo will speak at Berea College Thursday, Nov. 30. The 3 p.m. program in Phelps Stokes Chapel is free and open to the public.

For 40 years, Raymo has been a teacher and writer exploring the relationships between science, nature and the humanities. He has authored over a dozen books on science and nature for a popular audience, and four novels. In 1998, Raymo received the Lannan Literary Award for his non-fiction work. He is professor emeritus of physics and astronomy at Stonehill College, where he received the College’s first Award for Teaching Excellence, in 1989.

Raymo, whose weekly Science Musings appeared in the Boston Globe for 20 years, now ponders current science events, connections between nature and humankind, and other questions relating to the subject on his website www.sciencemusings.com. In his talk at Berea “The War of Faith and Science: A Resolution?” Raymo will take his audience to a time on the edge of the Western world when Mediterranean Christianity ran up against Celtic nature worship, and the Irish forged an accommodation of knowledge and faith that, in Raymo’s word, “can have a special resonance for us today.”

Raymo holds B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Notre Dame and M.S. from the University of California.
