Rev. Stacy Sauls, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Lexington, to lead “Accent on Christian Faith” Week at Berea College Sept. 26-28

Rev. Stacy Sauls, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Lexington, and recent finalist for the appointment of Presiding Bishop of the U.S. Episcopal Church, will lead “Accent on Christian Faith Week” activities at Berea College, Sept. 26-28. On Thursday, September 28, at 3 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel, Bishop Sauls will speak on “A Mission of Justice,” dealing with the role of the Christian church in fighting for justice for all human beings. Bishop Sauls is also scheduled to lead three noon worship services in Danforth Chapel, Tuesday-Thursday, September 26-28. “Accent on Christian Faith” is co-sponsored by Berea College Convocations, the Campus Christian Center and the Ruth Pister-Hampel Memorial Fund. All programs are free and open to the public. Rev. Sauls has been Bishop of Lexington since 2000. During his tenure two new congregations have begun. In addition to serving on numerous boards and committees within the Episcopal Church, Bishop Sauls has helped found a clinic, an alternative school and a food bank. He has a strong interest in ministry with Hispanics, the homeless, people with AIDS and the youth of the Lexington Diocese. A native of Atlanta, Ga., Bishop Sauls earned his bachelor’s degree from Furman University and a degree of Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia. After practicing law for five years, in 1985 Sauls entered the General Theological Seminary and graduated Cum Laude in 1988. That same year he was ordained a deacon at the Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta. Before coming to Lexington, Rev. Sauls served two Georgia churches, St. George’s in Griffin and St. Thomas’ in Savannah, before becoming the rector of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Atlanta from which he was elected bishop. |
