Ghanaian American concert pianist William Chapman Nyaho will perform a program of “Music by Composers of the African Diaspora” at Berea College Thursday, Feb. 27. The 8 p.m. concert is scheduled in Phelps Stokes Auditorium.
The Concert, part of Berea College’s observance of Black History Month, is co-sponsored by Berea College Convocations and the department of African and African American Studies. Admission is free and open to the public. Chapman Nyaho has performed recitals in Asia, Africa, Europe, North America and the Caribbean, to which he bring a unique cultural background and an eclectic musical sense. His ground-breaking CD SENKU: Piano Music by Composers of African Descent on the MSR Classics Label has been critically acclaimed by publications that include Gramophone Magazine and Fanfare Magazine.
After studying piano at the Conservatoire de Musique de Geneve, Switzerland, Chapman earned a Master of Music degree from Eastman School of Music, then his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Chapman Nyaho is also the winner of prizes from the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition and the Ibla Grand Prize International Competition in Italy. In addition to his career as a concert artist, Chapman Nyaho, who lives in Seattle, Wash., is an independent scholar and teacher with a special interest in composers of African descent. Ghanaian American concert pianist William Chapman Nyaho will perform a program of “Music by Composers of the African Diaspora” at Berea College Thursday, Feb. 27. The 8 p.m. concert is scheduled in Phelps Stokes Auditorium.
Chapman Nyaho also performs as soloist with various orchestras including the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. He is part of the duo piano team, the Nyaho/Garcia Duo that has also released a compact disc on the Centaur Label entitled Aaron Copland: Music For Two Pianos. He also has been featured on radio and television broadcasts in Ghana, Switzerland, and on National Public Radio (NPR).
