Old Berea College Foundation School Holding Reunion on Berea campus Oct. 6-7
| Students haven’t attended Berea College’s Foundation School for almost 40 years, but this Friday and Saturday alumni of the former high school will gather on the Berea campus for a reunion. More than 100 alumni, going back as far as the class of 1935, have registered for the event Oct. 6-7.
The Berea College Foundation School operated from 1910 until 1968 when it merged with the city of Berea’s independent school district to form the present Berea Community Schools. The Foundation School began as an ungraded school for young adults from the region who needed to complete their elementary education. Over time, it added junior high level grades and by the late 1940s had evolved into a four-year high school whose boarding and town students were taking courses at the College level. Among the events scheduled for Friday are campus tours led by current Berea students throughout the day and a Foundation School Golf Tournament at the Berea Country Club beginning at 11 a.m. An old-style school dance (complete with chaperones) is scheduled from 8-11 p.m. in the Woods-Penniman Building Commons on campus. On Saturday, a Foundation School group photo is scheduled for 11 a.m. on the steps of Union Church (rain site will be Baird Lounge in the Alumni Building). Following lunch in the Alumni Building Dining Services (Alumni Building), College President Larry Shinn and his wife, Nancy, will host an Ice Cream Social on the front lawn of the President’s House. Alumni are invited to visit and share stories in the Boone Tavern Lobby from 5-6 p.m., followed by a banquet in the Tavern’s Dining Room. A special photo show is scheduled afterward in Baird Lounge, beginning at 8:30. A “Foundation School Traveling Exhibit” with artifacts, memorabilia and photos from alumni will be on display in Baird Lounge the entire weekend.
