Neil LaBute’s Fat Pig opens April 24 at Berea College Play About Body Image Takes the Stage

4/22/09
The Berea College Theatre Laboratory continues its 2008-09 season with Neil LaBute’s Fat Pig opening April 24 and continuing through May 2.  All performances are at 8 p.m. in the McGaw Theatre, Jelkyl Drama Building on campus.

Fat Pig tells the story of Helen, a “plus sized” woman who falls in love with Tom, a “normal sized” man. The feelings are completely mutual, but Tom faces scrutiny and constant teasing from his co-workers who belittle his romantic choice.  How long can a man endure the taunts of his friends before he questions his actions?   LaBute’s powerful and painfully honest story and betrayal will force us to confront our prejudices about body image and shape.

Contemporary American playwright Neil LaBute has received high praise for his plays.  Fat Pig critiques our obsession with Hollywood ideals of beauty and also questions our own ability to change what we like and dislike about ourselves.  The New York Times says of Fat Pig, “The most emotionally engaging and unsettling of Mr. LaBute’s plays.”  Critic Jacques le Sourd states that Fat Pig “will make your squirm in your seat.  It’s theatre without novocaine [from] an author with a uniquely truthful voice.”

Directing this play is Director of Theatre Deborah Martin.  “Having been a plus-sized person most of my life, I can attest to the truth of this play.  Much of the dialogue has either been spoken by me or said to me.  Our students are galvanized by this play that deals so directly with a subject that is often difficult to discuss.”  Sue Reimondo, Director of Counseling Services at Berea College will be leading two post-show discussions on Friday, April 25 and Wednesday, April 29.

Performances of Fat Pig are 8pm April 24, 25, 29, 30 and May 1 and 2 in the McGaw Theatre.  Tickets range in price from $5-$10 and can be reserved by calling the Theatre Box Office at (859) 985 3300 Monday through Friday 1-5pm and one hour prior to curtain.  A sign-interpreted performance is scheduled for Friday, May 1.  Convocation performances are April 29 and May 1.

Note:  Fat Pig contains adult language and situations and is not suitable for children.
