The Music Department is presenting a series of concerts on Draper Tower’s 56-bell carillon, the largest in the state of Kentucky. The one-hour concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. Seating in the College Quadrangle will be provided, and a video monitor will allow persons at ground level to view the player in action. Admission is free for all events.
The performer on July 2 is Justin Ryan, a Masters degree candidate in Musicology at the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver. He is also a teaching assistant in Music History. Justin was a Fulbright Scholar in 2004-05 at the Netherlands Carillon School; the Chronicle of Higher Education in October, 2004 featured an article about his work in the Netherlands. In addition to recitals in Europe, he has performed throughout North America, including twice for the annual Congress of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America (2004 and 2006), and at the International Carillon Festival in Lake Wales, Florida (2007). In 2003, Justin passed his certification examination for Carillonneur membership when the Guild Congress was held at Berea College. Justin is also a trombonist and conductor, and has taught music and photography at the elementary through university levels. He holds a B.A. degree from the University of California (Berkeley) and studied orchestral conducting and music education at the University of Northern Colorado. He was the Executive Manager of the Bicycle-Friendly Berkeley Coalition before moving to Colorado. His program at Berea will include selections from Bach’s First Violin Partita, a Prelude by Matthias van den Gheyn, original carillon compositions by Dutch composer Henk Badings, Belgian Geert D’hollander, Frenchman Stefano Colletti and Minnesota composer Libby Larsen. He will also play three folksong arrangements: “Poor Wayfaring Stranger,” “Shenandoah” and “The Wonderful Crocodile.” The program is one hour in length. All are invited to attend. |
