Mark Hanis, grandchild of four Holocaust survivors and now an activist against genocide, speaking at Berea College April 30

4/15/09
After the horror of the Holocaust, in which millions of people were systematically killed by the Nazi Regime, the world responded by saying “Never Again.”  Grandchild of four holocaust survivors, Mark Hanis is dedicated to keeping the promise of preventing genocides.  He will speak at Berea College April 30, at 3 p.m.

The talk, titled “Darfur and Beyond:  What You Can Do To Stop Genocide,” is the annual Berea College Service Convocation cosponsored with the Berea College Campus Christian Center and Center for Excellence in Learning through Service.  Admission is free and open to the public.

Hanis, a recent graduate of Swarthmore College, founded the Genocide Intervention Network during his senior year in 2004 and is now executive director.  Aimed at ending the violence and conflict at Darfur, the network is dedicated to engaging the government and ordinary citizens to take political action.  He will discuss the on-going genocide in Darfur and also the GI-Net’s mission to empower individuals and communities with tools to prevent and stop genocide.

Since the conflict erupted in 2003, 400,000 innocent people have been slaughtered in Darfur, Sudan.  Over 2.7 million are left without a home, and approximately 80% of children under five years old are suffering from severe malnutrition.  In this political conflict over land and water resources between Arab and Non-Arab Sudanese, civilians are tortured and murdered, women are raped, children are abducted, and many food resources are destroyed.  Many are killed because of their ethnic identity.  The United States Congress has labeled Darfur’s crisis as genocide.
