The fourth and final concert in Berea College’s Summer Carillon Concert Series will be on Labor Day, Monday, September 3rd at 7:30 p.m. The featured performer is Tiffany Ng, carillonist from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY.
Berea’s 56-bell carillon in Draper Tower is Kentucky’s largest. Seating in the College Quadrangle is provided, and a video monitor will allow persons at ground level to view the player in action. Admission is free for all events. The concert will approximately one hour. Tiffany Ng grew up in San Francisco and studied piano at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She learned to play organ and carillon at Yale University, where she graduated with degrees in English and Music. Ng is now in the Master’s degree program in Organ Performance and Literature at Eastman. She is also Carillonist at the University of Rochester. In 2006, she graduated magna cum laude from the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen, Belgium. Ng’s program at Berea will include music by Schubert and Ravel, Dutch composer Henk Badings, and several new compositions. “Bellbook II” by Peter Vermeersch is in a minimalist style, evoking the sound of English change ringing, “Jumper Ralley” by Paul Takahashi is a fast dance with Romanian rhythms. “Tiffany Sketches” was composed in 2007 by Paul Coleman for carillon and computer-generated music, and is dedicated to Ms. Ng. “A Pleasant Journey” by Geert D’hollander was written in 2002 for the 400th anniversary of the United East India Company. It is based on a Dutch poem about an excursion to India. The American popular song “Stardust” by Hoagy Carmichael has been called “the finest love ballad ever written,” and has been performed by every important singer and band of the Big Band Era. It still weaves its magic through the sound of the carillon bells. All are invited to attend this last concert in the festive Summer Carillon Concert Series. |
