The second concert in Berea College’s Summer Carillon Concert Series will be on Monday, July 7 at 7:30 p.m. featuring College carillonneur John Courter. The 56-bell carillon of Draper Tower is Kentucky’s largest. Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. and last for one hour. Seating in the College Quadrangle is provided, and a video monitor will allow persons at ground level to view the player in action. Admission is free for all events.
John Courter’s program will begin several patriotic selections, followed by his “Festive Fanfare,” composed for the dedication of the Berea carillon in 2000. A few short pieces by Handel, Bach, Telemann and Mouret will represent the Baroque era. A special feature of the concert will be a carillon arrangement of “Becca’s Waltz,” composed by Berea musician and fiddler Andrew Taylor. Andrew is 16 years old and attends Berea Community School; he is the son of Stephen and Robin Taylor. He recently returned from a trip to Ireland where he accompanied a group of folk dancers. The program includes Courter’s “A Tribute to Copland,” which uses some elements of the style of noted 20th century American composer Aaron Copland. All are invited to attend this festive Summer Carillon Concert Series. The next concert will be held on August 11 at 7:30 p.m., and will feature John Gouwens, carillonneur of Culver Academies in Culver, Indiana. The final concert, on September 8th, will feature Richard Watson, bellfounder, carillon builder and performer from Georgetown, Ohio. |
