“Identity and Diversity in Appalachia” topic of Berea College symposium Nov. 1

10-22-2007
Where and what is Appalachia? Who are the many different people who call Appalachia home?  These and other questions will be addressed through personal stories and provocative insight from speakers who embody the richness of Appalachian diversity at a symposium at Berea College Nov. 1, scheduled 1:30 – 4 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Auditorium.

Panel speakers include Dr. Bill Turner – sociologist, National Endowment for the Humanities Chair in Appalachian Studies at Berea, and 2007 Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame inductee; Summar West – English composition instructor at Maryville College; Carl Thomas – Berea College associate director of admissions; Deborah Weiner -  public historian and author of the book “Coalfield Jews:  An Appalachian History;” and Patricia Tarquino – 2005 Berea alum and currently a Letcher County-based activist with Kentuckians for the Commonwealth.

The second half of the symposium will consist of “break-out sessions” to allow continued discussion on topics in small groups.

The symposium, which is free and open to the public, is co-Sponsored by Berea College Convocations, Appalachian Center, Black Cultural Center, African and African American Studies Department, and Center for Excellence in Learning through Service (CELTS).
