Georgia Guitar Quartet bringing a blend of southern comfort and classical sophistication to Berea College Sept. 17

9/8/09
The Georgia Guitar Quartet, four musicians from the American South, will bring a mix of classical works, folk music, and contemporary pieces to their performance at Berea College Thursday evening, Sept. 17.  The 8 p.m. concert is scheduled in Phelps Stokes Auditorium.

Kyle Dawkins, Brian Smith, Phil Snyder, and Jason Soloman make up the Georgia Guitar Quartet.  Their performance at Berea will include works by classical composers such Praetorious, Scarlatti, Chopin, Grieg and Guaraldi, but also contemporary musicians such as Radiohead.  Some of their original work will also be a part of the program.

These classical guitarists came together in 1996 while studying music under John Sutherland at the University of Georgia’s Hodgson School of Music and have played a variety of venues since then.  The Georgia Guitar Quartet has released four critically acclaimed albums entitled The Georgia Guitar Quartet, A Live Portrait, Mosaic, and, most recently, Puzzle.  For more information or to hear a sample of music from the Georgia Guitar Quartet visit http://www.georgiaguitarquartet.com/index.html

Like all Berea College convocations, the performance is free and open to the public.  The event is the first Stephenson Memorial Concert of the 2009-2010 season.  Other Stephenson Concerts coming up include The Horse Flies on Oct. 15; Toby Foyeh and Orchestra Africa Nov. 12; the American Spiritual Ensemble Feb. 11; the St. Petersburg String Quartet March 11, and pianist George Winston April 22.
