| The Grounds Team of Berea College’s Facilities Management department is leading a tree planting throughout campus Thursday in recognition of Arbor Day. Taking place from 1:30 until approximately 5 p.m. beginning at the Frost Building, the project will in part replace trees lost as the result of two summers of severe drought and this winter’s ice storm.
“The last couple of years have been tough on some of the large trees on campus,” says grounds coordinator Matthew Partain. “Two dry summers and a severe ice storm have contributed to the death and subsequent removal of six large oaks this winter and numerous smaller trees. “ Partain says he hopes the activity will become an annual event for beautifying the campus and give volunteers experience in the right way to plant a tree. “The Grounds Team feel it is important to not only renew a Berea College tradition of Arbor Day recognition and tree planting, but also give the students, faculty and staff a chance to participate and learn in the process,” he says. Approximately 20 trees will be planted depending on the number of volunteers, he says. Among the trees being planted are 10 crab apple trees along Chestnut Street; a serviceberry and an oak at the Frost Building; swamp white oak and redbud trees in front of the Woods-Penniman Building and four clump maples beside Seabury Center. Groups will be formed for planting at the different areas and volunteers will take part in the planting process from start to finish. All equipment needed will be provided and volunteers can participate for as much or as little time as they have available. |
