Dr. Marybeth Lima, creator of the Playground Project, speaking at Berea College April 29

4/13/10

Dr. Marybeth Lima, head of the Playground Project, will talk about her service learning program that provides children with safe play areas, in a program at Berea College Thursday, April 29. The presentation in Phelps-Stokes Auditorium is at 3 p.m.

Dr. Lima has worked with the Baton Rouge Community for twelve years to ensure that all children have access to safe, fun playgrounds. The Playground Project pairs elementary and college students to design new playgrounds for the area’s public schools. She believes that play is a right and not a privilege, and that children are the best playground designers; these beliefs have guided her service-learning teaching and research work with elementary school and college students and the larger community.

Lima, Professor of Biological and Architectural Engineering at Louisiana State University, is the recipient of the 2007 Thomas Ehrlich Faculty Award for Service-Learning, the 2005 Ernest A. Lynton Award for Faculty Professional Service & Academic Outreach, and the 2004 Gulf South Summit Award for Outstanding Contributions to Service-Learning in Higher Education. Lima, who writes and speaks widely on service-learning issues, is the co-author of the textbook Service-Learning: Engineering in Your Community.

The program is co-sponsored by the Campus Christian Center and the Center for Excellence in Learning Through Service (CELTS) and is the 2010 Service Convocation at Berea College. The event is free and open to the public.
