Blurring the line between profit-oriented businesses and non-profit organizations, many enterprises now combine market savvy with the drive to confront social needs. Judge Jeff Choate and Kelly Upchurch are two southeastern Kentucky natives who founded such organizations, Foothills Academy, which supports youth failed by the foster care system and American Health Management, Inc., which helps elderly who need daytime care. Upchurch and Judge Choate will talk about social entrepreneurship and their own successful enterprises in a program titled “Creating Jobs and Changing Lives “ at Berea College on Nov. 15, beginning at 3 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel. Judge Choate is a former District Judge for Clinton, Russell, and Wayne Counties whose idea was inspired by the plight of juveniles he encountered in his court. Upchurch, originally from Albany, is a psychologist with an extensive background in rehabilitation, whose adult day care businesses are addressing a pressing social need in rural counties. The convocation is sponsored by Berea College’s Entrepreneurship for the Public Good (EPG) program. Admission is free and all are welcome. Admission is free and all are welcome.
