Berea College Theatre Opens 2007-2008 Season Oct. 5 with James Baldwin’s The Amen Corner

9/21/07
The Berea College Theatre Laboratory opens its 2007-2008 production season with James Baldwin’s powerful script The Amen Corner, opening in the McGaw Theatre Oct. 5.  Performances continue through Oct. 16.

The Amen Corner is a provocative play that tells the story of Sister Margaret who pastors an African American Pentecostal Church.  Her future is in question when her estranged, dying husband returns, causing friction between her and her congregation as well as between her and her son.  Does her son, possessing a powerful musical gift, continue to use his gift for God, or does he pursue the dark, sinful jazz world that seduced his father?   Produced in collaboration with the Black Music Ensemble and the Campus Christian Center, the production features a 10-member choir and powerful Gospel songs.

Playwright James Baldwin is best known for his novel, Go Tell It On The Mountain.  A Civil Rights activist, his writing is focused on the issue of identity in early 20th century African American communities.  He wrote The Amen Corner in 1954.

Assistant Professor Rodney Clark directs the play.  “This production is an attempt to reach out and collaborate with programs across campus,” he says.  “Theatre is a powerful medium and we are fortunate to be able to work together on this timeless and moving story.  It’s also away to engage new students and introduce them to the theatre process.”

Performances for The Amen Corner are October 5, 6, 10-13 at 8 p.m. in the McGaw Theatre, Jelkyll Drama Center.  Tickets range in price from $5 to $10 and can be reserved by calling the Berea College Theatre Box Office at (859) 985-3300 Monday through Friday, 1-5 pm.  Admission for Berea College students is pre-paid as part of their student activities fee, but reservations are required.

As a service to our community, a sign interpreted performance will be Friday, October 12.  Listening devices for the hearing impaired, enlarged programs for the sight impaired, and special parking and seating privileges for those needing physical assistance are also available.

Note:   This play contains some adult language.
