Berea College Theatre Laboratory presents classic “A Raisin in the Sun” Nov. 10-18

11/6/06
The Berea College Theatre Laboratory continues its 2006-2007 performing season with the classic drama A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry opening November 10 in the McGaw Theatre. Performances run through the Berea College Homecoming weekend until Nov. 18.A Raisin in the Sun was the first play produced on Broadway written by an African American, having its premiere in 1958 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in New York. The story follows Walter Lee, his sister Beneatha, and their mother Lena Younger, as they wrestle with their dreams and the means to attain them. Hansberry said of her play, “All art is ultimately social: that which agitates and that which prepares the mind for slumber.” The title of the play is taken from the Langston Hughes poem, “Harlem,” which states, “What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun…or does it explode?”

Rodney Clark directs the cast and says of the play, “Although many professors at Berea College reference this play in their classes, the Berea College Theatre Laboratory has never produced this classic. I thought it would be a wonderful idea to direct this timeless work of art to exhibit the talents of our theatre students, and give other students an opportunity to witness Hansberry’s work.”

Performances for A Raisin in the Sun are November 10, 11, and 15-18 at 8pm in the McGaw Theatre. Tickets range in price from $5 to $10 and can be reserved by calling the Berea College Theatre Box Office at (859) 985-3300 Monday through Friday, 1-5 pm. Berea College students are admitted free of charge. As a service to our community, a sign-interpreted performance is offered Friday, November 17. Listening devices for the hearing impaired, enlarged programs for the sight impaired, and special parking and seating privileges for those needing physical assistance are also available.
