| Students will get a day off from classes and labor to experience a day of outdoor fun on Wednesday, Oct. 15 for the annual Berea College Mountain Day, a College tradition since 1875.
The celebration begins with another tradition on “Mountain Day Even,” Tuesday, Oct. 14, when the Berea College Wind and Jazz Ensembles will present their 33rd annual Mountain Day Eve concert in Gray Auditorium (located in Presser Hall). The concert begins at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free. On Wednesday, students, staff, faculty, and alumni are encouraged to hike “the mountain” for the sunrise. The Sunrise Celebration begins with shuttles out to the mountains at 5:30 a.m., and includes the Berea College Concert Choir and the Berea College Country Dancers. This year’s festival activities include shuttles out to the mountains and back from 10:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., lunch from 11:30 a.m.—1:30 p.m., games, music, performances, and contests from 11:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and of course, hiking in the College forest all day. College President Larry Shinn will give an opening welcome at 11:20 a.m. to kick-off the festivities. At “the mountain” (College Forest on Ky. Hwy. 21) teams of students will compete in “Pioneer Games” that include cross-cut saw and log toss, tomahawk throwing, archery, horseshoes, and corn hole. A variety of other games, activities, and food for children and adults are offered at Indian Fort from 11:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. including face-painting, caricatures, Yoga, Qi-Gong, Tai-Chi, tours up toward the Pinnacles, and many more. Lunch will be served at Indian Fort from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. is open to all students, staff, faculty, alumni and their families. All others can purchase lunch at $5. In case of rain on Wednesday, activities and lunch are scheduled in Upper Seabury Gym of Seabury Center, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Mountain Eve (Brushy Fork) events will be cancelled.
