The Berea College baseball program is teaming with McDonald’s and the Matt Ross Fund to provide “Kid’s Weekend” on April 11th-12th.  All events are free.

Friday night will be “Hats Off to Kids” Night at the ballpark.  During the team’s home game against Cincinnati Christian University, kids in attendance will have the opportunity to participate in numerous activities.  The evening will begin with nine lucky fans taking the field with the Mountaineers and receiving an autographed hat.  Several other fans will be selected for on-field competitions, including a wiffle ball homerun derby, a race around the bases, a bat race, and a wheelbarrow race.  McDonald’s will provide prizes to the contest winners, as well as coupons for free food to all kids in attendance.

There will be several other exciting entertainment options throughout the evening, including a chance for kids to see how fast they can throw on a machine provided by The Matt Ross Fund.  After the game, kids will have an opportunity to run the bases, as well as get autographs and pictures taken with the players.  First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. and gates will open at 3 p.m. for batting practice.  Admission is free to all Berea College baseball games.

Kid’s Weekend will continue on Saturday, April 12th, as the team, in an effort to promote youth baseball in Madison and surrounding counties, will host a free baseball clinic.  The morning clinic will be for 5-9 year olds and the afternoon clinic will be for players 10-14 years old.  Both camps will be held at the college’s baseball field, located on the Berea College campus.  Parking will be limited for the event; there is a small lot located at the end of Mill Street (off Jefferson Street) and parents can also use the Berea Community School lot.  Parents are encouraged to drop players off at the Mill Street field entrance, where a registration table will be set up.  While the baseball clinic is free for all participants, donations will be accepted and all proceeds will go to the Matt Ross Fund, an organization that provides financial assistance (equipment donations, player fee assistance, etc.) to the Berea Youth Baseball League.

Registration for the morning clinic will be from 8:30 – 9:00 and the clinic will run from 9:00 – 11:00.  Registration for the afternoon clinic will begin at 12:30, with the camp scheduled to run from 1:00 – 4:00.  Participants should wear appropriate practice attire and bring their own baseball gloves.  A few bats will be provided, but players are welcome to bring their own.

In the event of inclement weather on Friday or Saturday, fans should call the Berea College baseball office (859.985.3429) for any information regarding schedule changes and/or cancellations.  If you have any questions about the camp or need directions to the field, please contact Coach Ryan Hess by email at or by phone at 859.625.2418.
