| Berea College Labor Day, a tradition begun in 1922, celebrates the work values to which Berea is committed — the dignity of all labor, serving the common good through work that benefits the college and community, and work as educational. Taking place next Tuesday, April 21, it’s, also a day of fun and games as students get the day off from classes and their campus jobs.
This year Labor Day theme is “Labor in the Now. Benefit in the Future,” emphasizing the connection between students’ Berea work experience and the edge it can provide in getting and excelling in jobs after graduation. Activities for Berea students are planned from 10:30 a.m. through 3 p.m. in Seabury Center. The arena floor will be the site for a variety of games and booths sponsored by College departments – many inspired by the nature of the work in those departments – along with performances by student and faculty/staff groups throughout the day, including this year’s winner’s of the “Berea’s Got Talent” competition. New fun activities include a corn hole tournament and a mechanical bull. Among the performers this year will be “Mint Condition,” a rock band made up of Berea College faculty and staff members David K. Tipton (Dean of Labor); John Blair (Payroll Manager); Glen Dandeneau (Assistant Forester); Jeffrey L. Richey (Assoc. Professor of Philosophy and Religion) and Steven Hayes (Facilities Management Mechanic). Later, students will enjoy a Mexican-themed Dinner in with DJ Ben Wilcox. On Monday, April 20, there will be a Labor Day Eve Street Dance with the Berea College Country Dancers from 6 – 8 p.m. on Main Street in front of Boone Tavern. The public is invited to this free event. For more information, contact David Slinker (859-985-3734) in the Berea College Labor Program office. |
