4/29/10
This Sunday, May 2 from 4:30 – 6:30pm at Union Church, the Berea College Chapter of Mortar Board is sponsoring “Pasta for a Purpose, ” a spaghetti dinner to raise awareness of literacy needs in the Berea Community and funds for the Silver Creek Elementary School Leveled Book Room. The cost is $10 for adults and $6 for children. All proceeds will go to supporting the Book Room.
The Alpha Sigma Chi (AΣΧ) Chapter of Mortar Board at Berea College strives to provide opportunities for continued leadership development, promoting service to colleges and universities and encouraging lifelong contributions to the local and global community. Although there are many honor societies, Mortar Board is truly a unique organization which seeks to establish active and involved, first-rate, members who are devoted to their chapter and communities. Mortar Board was established at Berea College in 1973 and has sought to grow alongside the Berea Community ever since.
In 2002, Mortar Board delegates voted to make a pro-literacy project, “Reading is Leading,” the permanent national project. This school year, the Berea Chapter has been helping establish the Book Room at Silver Creek Elementary.
In the past few years the members have been involved in several other literacy campaigns such as the 2008 “Trick-or-Treat for Books,” 2008 partnership with First Book of Madison County for “Green Eggs and Ham,” 2009 “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF,” 2010 First Book Fundraiser and many other activities in the community.
“We hope that readers will partner with us to help make our community stronger, not just today, but forever,” says Berea College senior Ellie Rung, president of Berea’s Mortar Board chapter.
