New Trustee Elected to Berea College Board

11/29/10

Stephanie Bowling Zeigler, an architectural designer from Rowayton, Conn., was elected to the Berea College board of trustees at the board’s October meeting. Zeigler was appointed to a six-year term to begin immediately. Zeigler, a founding partner of Hedge Design Collective, a Los Angeles based design cooperative, earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and fine arts from Colgate University and a Master of Arts in architecture from Southern California Institute of Architecture.

Most recently Zeigler worked as a consultant on multiple aspects of real estate and renovations, graphic design and interior design projects. Two of her architectural designs have been featured in national publications. Having traveled to more than 30 countries, Zeigler studied architecture in Paris, France and Kyoto, Japan, and spent several weeks building homes and teaching sustainability in Brazil.

Zeigler volunteers with Hotchkiss School, an independent boarding school in Lakeville, Conn., and New Canaan Country School, an independent elementary and middle school in New Canaan, Conn. She has served on various boards including the Ox Ridge Hunt Club.

Zeigler’s parents served as Berea College trustees. Her father, the late Jim Bowling, served as a trustee from 1968-97. Her mother, Ann Jones Bowling, served as a college trustee from 2001-07. Zeigler is married and has three young children. Her family continues to reside in Connecticut.

Founded in 1855, Berea College is the south’s first interracial and coeducational college. Focusing on learning, labor and service, Berea charges no tuition and admits only academically promising students, primarily from Appalachia, who have limited economic resources. All students must work 10 hours weekly, earning money for books, room and board.
