Berea College’s “Head of the Holler” debuts with Silas House on KET network

Acclaimed novelist Silas House is the featured guest on the Aug. 1, 2010 premiere of “HeadoftheHoller,” a half-hour talk show produced by BereaCollege and aired on the KentuckyEducationalTelevision (KET) network. The episode will be aired several times in August.

Hosted by Dr. ChadBerry, director of Berea’s Appalachian center, “Head of the Holler” is a monthly series that examines issues facing Appalachia and features notable guests from the region.

In the first episode House talks about his childhood in eastern Kentucky, the inspirations for his best-selling novels and his passion for preserving Appalachia’s hills and hollows. Author of four novels and a two-time recipient of the Kentucky Novel of the Year award, House is the National Endowment for the Humanities chair in Appalachian Studies at Berea where he will teach Appalachian literature in the fall.

Recorded on location at the LoyalJonesAppalachianCenter at Berea College, “Head of the Holler” premieres on the KET and KET KY channels through August. ”Head of the Holler” will be a regular series on the network and a new episode will air each month. All of KET’s digital channels are available to Insight Communications and Time Warner cable subscribers. Satellite TV subscribers should contact your providers to find out which KET services are offered in your areas. The episodes will also be available on Berea’sYouTubechannel.

Future episodes will feature sociologist Dr. WilliamTurner, who examines the experiences of blacks in Appalachia, artist and Riverkeeper director Pat Banks, Appalshop filmmaker Mimi Pickering and Melody Skidmore and Hope Brown, two teachers from eastern Kentucky. Other shows in production will focus on storytelling, music, environmentalism, sustainability, politics, education, history, economics, business and other topics and issues affecting Appalachia.
