Berea College to Dedicate Fee Glade

5/14/2010

Berea College invites the public and media representatives to the dedication of the John G. Fee Glade, on Friday, May 21. The event will feature live musical entertainment by the Black Music Ensemble beginning at 5:15 p.m. and a ceremony of dedication at 5:30 p.m. with remarks by various College officials, and recognition of donors who helped underwrite the cost of the Glade.

The John G. Fee Glade is new green space that reclaims a ravine previously occupied by the old heat plant, a laundry, and Berea’s utilities operations. The transformation of this area has been designed to provide a green space that invites both personal contemplation and community gatherings.

The Glade includes a “Legacy Wall,” which contains the names of every recorded bequestor to Berea College since its founding and will continue to do so into the future, honoring all who have extended John G. Fee’s legacy of “impartial love” with a testamentary gift to Berea College.

The Glade also contains stones engraved with quotations from John G. Fee. At one entrance to the Glade, there is an engraved copy of the College’s Great Commitments to educate and inspire those walking through the Glade to pause, reflect, and re-consider Berea’s inclusive Christian principles, such as the power of “love over hate, human dignity and equality, and peace with justice,” the eternal ideals to which Bereans aspire.
