Author George Ella Lyon Appears on “Head of the Holler” on KET

Prolific writer George Ella Lyon is the featured guest on the December episode of “Head of the Holler” airing on Kentucky Educational Television. Hosted by Dr. Chad Berry, director of Berea’s Appalachian Center, “Head of the Holler” is a monthly series that examines issues facing Appalachia and features notable guests from the region. In this episode Lyon talks about growing up in Harlan County and finding inspiration for writing.

Author of nearly 40 novels, poetry books, children’s books and picture books, Lyon has earned several awards including the Book of the Year award from Appalachian Writers Association.

Lyon earned her bachelor’s degree in music and English at Centre College and her master’s degree at University of Arkansas in 1972. In 1978 she earned her doctorate at Indiana University–Bloomington. She has taught writing at University of Kentucky, Centre College, Transylvania University and Radford University.

Lyon lives in Lexington Kentucky with her husband and their two sons.
