14th Annual “Hunger Hurts” Food Drive sponsored by Berea College’s Students for Appalachia, set for Oct. 28

10/16/06
Berea College’s Students for Appalachia (SFA) are gearing up for the 14th Annual Hunger Hurts Food Drive. Last year the food drive raised over 7,000 pounds of food to donate to the Berea Food Bank, and they hope to have as much success this year as the last. Kick off for this community-wide event is set for October 28, at 8 a.m. at the First Christian Church of Berea. Food will be collected until 2 p.m.

The donations made to the Food Drive will go to the Berea Food Bank, located at First Christian Church. The Food Bank serves more than 200 southern Madison County families each year, a number expected to increase through the years coming and is sponsored the Berea Faith Community Outreach. Members of the Outreach include local churches, individuals, and regional food distribution agencies, all of whom take a hand in providing families with necessary groceries for a week in relation to the size of that family. Donations taken during the food drive will supply the pantry for the winter and provide food to many families during the holiday season. Excess donations will go to the Berea College Non-traditional Student Pantry.

From Sunday October 22 to Wednesday October 25, teams of volunteers will distribute bags throughout the community. If you would like to help, simply fill the bag with non-perishable food items and put on their doorsteps by 9 a.m. on Oct. 28 for pick-up. Suggested items include canned fruit or vegetables, orange juice, jelly, peanut butter, tuna, salmon, pasta sauce, pork and beans, instant potatoes, spaghetti, crackers, corn bread mix, hot cereals, dry cereals, rice, dried fruits, sugar, cooking oil, and flour. Needed also are non-food products such as deodorant, hand or body soap, dish soap, and cleaning materials. Residents are asked to have

The SFA welcomes volunteers and donations in any form for this cause. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Sheila Lyons at (859)-985-3935 Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
