Course Overview
 

The summer leadership course is a comprehensive program based on a broad philosophy of leadership upon which subsequent competencies are built. The course consists of components that assist the student in gaining self-awareness, developing the relationship of one's self to others in a teacher/learner role, exploring the uniqueness of the institutional environment within which the leadership and teamwork is practiced, and expanded the ability to make practical applications of theoretical concepts. The course contains three main components:

Education

Historical perspectives on leadership

  • Awareness and understanding of various leadership styles, approaches, methods, theories, and applications
  • Exploration and development of personal leadership style

Personal Development

  • Personal management issues such as: time management, ethical decision-making, reflection, problem-solving, and goal-setting
  • Critical/creative thinking skills in a group setting

Development

Internal team building

  • Shared leadership, delegation, group dynamics and lifespan
  • Group decision-making and problem-solving models
  • Diversity/Ethics

External team building (Community development)

  • Application to residence hall roles and issues
  • Effective hall and staff meetings
  • Staff group dynamics
  • Campus informational training
