Program Overview
Over
150 students work in the eight departments of the Student Crafts Program. Started
in 1893 as "Fireside Weaving", the Student Crafts Program now includes
Broomcraft, Woodcraft, Weaving, Ceramics, Wrought
Iron, two gift shops and
the Distribution Center.
Berea
College student crafts are marketed worldwide. The Log
House Craft Gallery,
Boone Tavern Gift Shop, mail order Catalogue, and Internet E-Commerce generate
retail sales. The program wholesales to over 500 gift shops and participates
in many craft fairs and trade shows nationwide.
Production
departments offer the opportunity to learn craft skills; the degree of accomplishment
depends upon the individual student. Some
become skilled designer/technicians and go on to careers as studio crafts
people.
The
marketing areas offer valuable sales and management experience. In
every department there are opportunities for students to advance into supervisory
positions.
