Information Systems & Services

Department Overview

There was a time when we were called the Computer Center. But the Computer Center is a place and we're all about service to you, our customers. So our name was changed to Information Systems and Services (IS&S) to more accurately reflect what we do. IS&S is composed of five teams that I'd like to introduce to you.

End User Support—This is the group you are most likely to interface with. It includes the Windows and Macintosh support groups, as well as the Help Desk and the Operations group. These folks stand ready to make sure that you, the user, get the most out of your information technology.

Network—Increasingly, the wires (and fiber-optic cables and radio waves) that connect us together are a more and more important part of our technology. No longer is it enough that we have a computer; we expect to be able to communicate between computers and with each other, using our technology. The Network Team makes sure all those wires and blinking lights are something you never have to think about.

Data Services—Particularly those of you in the administrative offices will be familiar with Banner, Berea College's enterprise-wide software that does everything from accounting to transcripts to class schedules to fund raising. The Data Services team helps us get the most out of Banner through database maintenance, training and programming.

Media Services—Not everything associated with information technology has to be associated with a computer. The Media Services team makes sure that we have the proper equipment, whether it is computerized or not, to ensure excellent teaching and learning experiences, both in the classroom and out.

Instructional Technology—Berea is, after all, a college, and instruction of students is our overall mission. The Instructional Technology group works with faculty and others to more effectively utilize technology for teaching and learning. This team also supports software training and frequently works with the Media Services team to support student- and faculty-initiated technology projects.

While these five teams each have a unique emphasis, the reality is that all of IS&S is an integrated whole with a vision for service you, our customer, in ways that assist your use of information technology at Berea College.
