Department Overview
Elderhostel Programs
Elderhostel programs at Berea College offer learners
55 years of age and older one week educational opportunities to explore Appalachian
culture, history, and literature. Each
program features a wellness course, stimulating lectures and demonstrations
taught by Berea College faculty and experts from the community, and
evening programs
which provide enriching examples of Appalachian culture. Participants come
from all over the nation and enjoy accommodations and meals for five
nights and six days at Boone Tavern. The
Office of Special Programs coordinates 7 – 9 programs per year to inspire
lifelong learning as well as to preserve Appalachian heritage.
Berea Forum
The Berea Forum
provides educational, informational and cultural programming for the
retired citizens of Berea and surrounding areas. Although our
programs are designed
for retirees, we welcome anyone wishing to take part of the free programming
coordinated by a committee of retired persons with staff assistance
from Berea College's Office of Special Programs. The
Forum began in October 1985 to offer continuing education programs
for older learners with funding and staff assistance from the President's
office. Currently the Forum coordinates a program once a month on campus
during
each fall and
spring semester with a concluding semester-end party. Participants
can also take advantage of a bus trip in the summer time.
Community
Education
Berea
College is committed to the process of lifelong learning. The
Office of Special Programs seeks to contribute to affordable, non-credited,
educational opportunities that strive to enhance personal and professional
development for residents of Berea and surrounding communities.
