Department Overview
The Brushy Fork Institute
is a leadership-training program for the Central Appalachian
region. We
annually produce workshops to help community activists
learn individual and group skills and make positive changes
in their home communities. We
work in collaboration with other community and grassroots
organizations on projects ranging from staff retreats
to publishing directories to strategic planning. Brushy
Fork also publishes a newsletter for graduates from its
leadership program. Our two student workers are an integral part of producing
our workshops and newsletter.
Our student secretaries
primarily assist the administrative assistant. Knowledge
of the Macintosh Computer is helpful because it is the
students' responsibility to do word processing, database
entries, and typing letters and memos. Other tasks include running errands, helping with bulk mailings,
photo copying, making phone calls, janitorial tasks,
and helping with on-campus conferences.
Prerequisites
for both jobs are typing skills, organizational skills,
good phone skills, maturity, and an understanding of
responsibility. If
you are interested in community growth in Appalachia
and possess these necessary skills, we encourage you
to apply.
