Department Overview
The Black Cultural
Center first opened its doors in July of 1983. The
Center was established and based on the premise that
true integration and equality cannot be achieved without
a general understanding of black culture.
The mission of the
Black Cultural Center is to assist Berea College in maintaining
an environment that acknowledges, respects, and enhances
diversity and promotes interracial educational opportunities. We
assist the college in its effort to recruit, retain,
and graduate African American students; provide support
services, programs, and activities for African American
students to help them in achieve their highest educational
potential. The
BCC assists Berea College in recruiting and retaining
African American faculty and staff; work closely with
African American faculty and staff; and establish working
relationships with African American communities throughout
the Appalachian Region.
