Labor Positions in TRIO: Upward Bound Math/Science
Upward Bound Math/Science (UBMS) is a Berea College outreach program, serving high school students from five counties in central Kentucky. The program is designed to provide participants with the skills and motivation necessary for success in post-secondary education. The goal of UBMS is to help high school students recognize and develop their potential to excel in mathematics and the sciences and to encourage them to pursue college degrees in these fields. The program provides an environment designed to nourish students’ interests in math and science, motivate them to achieve far beyond their expectations, and support their belief in themselves and their abilities. To assist in achieving such outcomes, the program appoints a Student Program Coordinator during the academic year. Primary responsibilities include oversight of a mentor program and regular correspondence with the fifty students involved in the program. This position does involve both office and occasional field work. Some of the work is in the communities we serve, so a driver’s license and defensive driving (with van certification) are necessary. The Student Program Coordinator must be mature, self-directed, and able to work with minimal supervision.
Upward Bound Math/Science also hires 8-10 Tutor-Counselors to work in the summer residential component of the program.
