Blackboard and Internet Explorer

Microsoft recently released an update patch to Internet Explorer in order to fix some known holes in the web browser and increase security. This update will have some effect on Blackboard functionality.

When using Blackboard, you will have to hit the SPACEBAR (or click within a text box) to:

  • Activate textboxes (textbox or WYSIWIG editors).
  • Launch embedded content (Flash content, movies, and sound files). You may be prompted by a window to activate ActiveX; when prompted click "OK".
  • Launch equations created with Equation Editor.
  • Activate Virtual Classroom (Full Feature Chat) and Lightweight Chat.

Please contact Instructional Technology at 3807 or

if you have any questions.

Easier Blackboard Login

We have made logging into Blackboard even easier! You may now visit the "Current Student" page or the "Faculty and Staff" page located on www.berea.edu to access a login button. This is addition to using blackboard.berea.edu.

Feb. 26   Grade book Weight by Category
Thanks to Jan Pearce for contributing this: Even thought Blackboard asks for the number of points possible for each item entered into the grade book, Blackboard expects each of the items in a certain category (e.g. assignments) to have the same weight in the course. I found this out because I typically give assignments which are assigned points based upon their difficulty, and I was surprised to find that Blackboard was displaying both a 2 point assignment and a 10 point assignment as worth 10.7% of the value in the course. (This grading problem can be corrected by using the "Weight by Item" category, but use of this category requires by-hand recomputation each time a new item is entered.)

Feb. 17   Web Browser Requirement

Internet Explorer is the only official supported web browser for Blackboard. This means that if students chose to use any other web browser (such as Netscape or Firefox) some features of Blackboard may not work correctly or may not be available. Also, online exams quizzes and exams may act quirky with other browsers. If you or your student experiences problems with Blackboard when using another browser, please log out of Blackboard, and log in using Internet Explorer.

Mac users: There are some functions of Blackboard that may not work correctly with any Mac web browser. This does not mean that Blackboard will not work with a Mac, it only means that some options may not be available or extra steps need to be followed. An example of this is attachments, which may first need to be downloaded to the desktop and then opened.
