Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Internship?

An Internship provides an opportunity to apply classroom learning to a practical work environment. The opportunity allows the student to earn academic credit for on-the-job experience and learning.

Am I a good candidate for an Internship?

If you are a student who wants an edge on your future and are willing to take learning into your own hands in order to get that competitive edge, you should consider an internship. The program is offered to sophomores, juniors, and seniors, who are not on academic, labor, or social probation.

Who will assist me in my Internship?

You will be aided in the internship by two faculty sponsors. These sponsors help determined learning objectives and measure progress. The agency supervisor is also vital to your internship. This person provides daily supervision, evaluation, and support. The internship Coordinator acts as the liaison between your faculty sponsors, agency supervisor, and yourself. She will work with you from the early stages through completion of the study.

When can I do an Internship?

An Internship may take place during any of the academic terms.  Most students do internships during Short Term or Summer Term.  It is also possible to complete a multiple term internship.

What kind of Internship can be done?

The possibilities are unlimited!  In the past internships have ranged from journalism at the Lexington Herald-Leader to social work with the state agencies to chemical research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to designing computer systems at Bradford Life Insurance.  Internships can also be combined with labor positions on campus in certain situations.

When should I begin planning an Internship?

Planning should begin early, at the beginning of the semester preceding the Internship term.  Time is needed to secure a placement, to select faculty sponsors, and to complete the Internship proposal in time for registration.
